New Month, New Fezzes

Once again, it has been some time since we updated. Thankfully, we’ve recently acquired two new pieces that fill significant holes in the collection.

First up, we have a fez from the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows, which is an organization for American American men patterned off of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The GUO of OF is much smaller than the IOOF, making this piece a welcome find.

Next, we have a fez from a female organization, the Order of Cyrenes. Hailing from the Prince Hall family, this group is a compliment to the Knights Templar, PHA, in many jurisdictions.

We hope you enjoy the updates and keep coming back for more!

Look, up in the sky!

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s a new post at the Fez Museum!

We apologize for the lack of updates over the last two months or so. As a Museum, we haven’t had many additions to the collection in recent time. This is partly due the niche of items we are collection and partly due to the lack of available fezzes for purchase.

However, we have managed to pick up two new items for you to check out. First, we have a brand new exhibit over in the PHA Ladies Groups area. The Ladies Circle of Perfection, or LOCOP, is attached to the Royal and Select Master Masons, PHA. It’s a relatively new group on the Masonic scene, so check out their fez for something different.

Our other update is a very niche piece over in the Alhambra section. A fez from Adra Caravan No. 79, formerly of Erie, PA (where the museum curator grew up) has been obtained. While it isn’t very fancy, it does provide a nice contrast to the other Alhambra fezzes in the collection.

While the updates are going to continue to be sporadic, we hope that you continue to enjoy our museum and find the information useful.

Well, well, well…

What do we have here? That’s right, an update!

As we stated in a previous post, it’s getting harder to find fezzes that are needed for the collection, hence the lack of updates. However, we recently picked up two new fezzes that we are excited to share with you.

Start your tour of this update over in the Shrine area with a nice example of an officer’s fez in the Ballut Abyad exhibit. You get extra points if you know how to pronounce that! Secondly, you can take a peak over at an entirely new area featuring the United Commercial Travelers, which started as a fraternal group for salesmen.

We hope you enjoy this update and we look forward to bringing you even more fez related fun in the future!

Introducing Mr. Fezziwig!

It has been quite a while since we’ve posted anything new here at the Museum. That is mainly because we haven’t had any new additions to the collection since shortly after the Christmas holiday. The rarer specimens for which we are in the market have been increasingly harder to come by, so there is a shortage of new fezzes to post.

However, we are in possession of one cute little fez related object that we wanted to share with you – Mr. Fezziwig.  In the early to mid 20th century these types of figures were quite popular. Being made of metal and with a bit of paint to make the fez standout, they were nice little knick-knacks for the fraternalist. This piece was donated to the Museum by the father of the curator and has become sort of a mascot for the collection.

In the future, as we add new fezzes, we’ll be sure to post them. We appreciate your patience as we continue to grow!

Mystery Solved!

Even the Fez Museum gets stumped from time to time – hence why we have the Unknown Fezzes page. But, thanks to the internet, we often are able to identify those mysterious pieces and learn a little bit more about fraternal history. Today, we have just such an occurrence.

For a while now we have pondered over the shortest fez in our collection, a wee little hat that only measured three inches high. Now, thanks to a contact from Sandra Fleming, of Houston, TX, we have confirmed that the fez  relates to the Daughters of Mokanna at Chinar Grotto. Go check it out over in the Daughters of Mokanna section!

Thank you to Sandra for contacting us with this information. It’s thanks to viewers like her that we are able to fill in key historical details. If you happen to know any interesting facts about any of our pieces, please drop us a note on the Contact page!
